France' and Belgium could not be broken. These terms were stated by Count Bernstorff, at that time German Ambassador in Washington. Briefly they were as follows: 1. All French colonies. 2. All North-eastern France. 3. An indemnity of £400,000,000. 4. A tariff allowing ejl Gorman goods to enter France free for 25 years without reciprocity for French goods entering Germany. 5. No recruiting in France for 25 years. 6. Destruction of all French fortresses. 7. France to surrender "3,000,000 rifles, 2000 cannon,'and 40,000 horses. 8. Protection of all German patents used in France without reciprocity on French patents in 'Germany. 9. France'to cut herself adrift from Russia and Great Britain. '• 1. Prance to make an alliance with Germany for 25 years.
