OCCUPIED TERRITORY.
i NEW ZEALAND BRIGADE. j MANY ANXIOUS TO 1 RETURN, i j Reference to the inclusion of New | Zealanders in the army of occupation ! in Germany is contained in a letter rcj ceived in Auckland this week from an j officer in the New' Zealand BrlgaTc. | Writing from Beauvois, ho saj’s: “Y7c are leaving for Germany in about ten days, to occupy the Rhine territory, j General Russell gave an address to the I officers of the Now Zealand Division, j and said that the authorities had deI eidad to send us to Germany, as the I people of New Zealand would, in a •way, expect it. I think that it is a compilment to the division, 'which has always been successful in any ‘stunt’ which it undertook, and winch has fought so brilliantly all these- years. There is quite a lot of diversity of opinion; many of the men do not w T ant to go to Germany, hut would prefer to go straight home. This, of course, can’t be done, owing to shortage of shipping, and we must go back as boats are available. To my mind, we might as well put in the time going to Germany as waiting here and drilling. as w'e have done for the last three w’eeks. The idea is, as soon as we get into our permanent quarters in Germany, to bring into immediate working activity the educational Every man has to take some subject or trade to fit him to gain his own living. It is an ambitious idea, but absolutely sound, and the boys like the notion, and are quite keen to get down, to something useful again. A lot of them will go in for agriculture, which is a good subject for Now Zealanders.
