An instance of German misuse of the Red Cross is quoted, in ia letter received by Mrs.'■'J. IT. Smith, Waitara, from her son Fred, who has belon fighting in France. “ There is one item I must not forget,” he says, “and I would not have believed it had I not seen it for myself. That was a Hun with a white band and big rod cross on his arm, lying dead over a machine gun —killed on the job. There was absolutely no mistake about it. The gun was in a fine position, and he had a whole pile of empty cases alongside him. No doubt he was the cause of numerous 'casualties before tie was put out.”
