RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL.
[ENGINEER'S MONTHLY REPORT. TEKAPUA RIDING. ( 'A fair number of men have now been got to work clearing slips, and in a few weeks I hope to bave tbe roads all in good order. j RUANUI RIDING. j "With Cr. Petersen I made a thorough ; Inspection of this riding. All the roads are open for traffic, but a large amount of solid work has yet to be done to put them in good order. Many of the gravelled roads are much out of repair, and will require attention as soon as men and teams are available. .Two huts for roadmen are required, one at Collier's Junction and the other of Eangiwae cross roads. The Council has a good hut on roadside at Ruanui that could be moved to Collier's Junction, but a new hut should be built at Rangiwae. There is also a good shed for grader at Ruanui which should be moved to Mataroa. There is a general desire among ratepayers in this riding to consider a comprehensive metalling scheme to cover all the main roads. I have therefore prepared estimates for these works covering a total distance or about 35 miles. A good deal of the ballast would require to be sent up from Ohingaiti, and there are also good shell rock pits both at Hihitahi and Rangiwae. It would probably take about three years to carry out all the works proposed. The estimated cost -would be about £45,000 over the whole riding. I would suggest the Minister of Public Works be approached with a request for £1 for £1 subsidy. The grader has been started on Ma-taroa-Ruanui Road. EREWHON RIDING. Roads have dried up considerably, and are in fair order. AWARUA RIDING. The main roads have been cleared Of slips, but a good deal of work still remains on the back roads. However since the holidays men have been mor'plentiful, and, the weather being good, better progress can be looked for. Gravelling Makino Road has been recommenced, and fair progress has been made. Mr. Hugh Seally, contractor for gravelling Tuhoo Road, has written that he cannot proceed with the work, and has therefore abandoned the contract. The grader has made a start, and is now on the Ohutu-Pukeokahu Road.
