A SAD ACCIDENT.

YOUNG BOY MEETS WITH HIS DEATH.

An accident, with v ery sad circumstances, occurred on Tuesday night at the late Mr. D. Ledward's station at INgarukehu. Tvlr. Awdry has a fencing contract on the station, and during the holidays he had with him. his only son r Frank Chennefs Awdrey, aged 13 years, as company. On Tuesday he ■was playing about round where his father was working, having a couple or dogs as playmates. Just on dusk Mr. Awdry missed the lad, and growing anxious he searched in every direction, but it was not till 3.30 the following morning, as dawn was breaking, that he found his son, reclining with his head on his arm, as if asleep. On going up to him he was greatly shocked to find the hoy was dead, being quits cold. Taking the body in his arms, the bereaved, father carried it to the hiijt only a short distance away, and on exjfeiriination he found a small puncture below the~breast bone. On going hack to the spot whence he removed the body he found an open pocketknife in a pool of blood. Mr. Awdry went to the manager's place and. 1 telephoned through to Mr. J. R. Aldridge for help, which after some delay was forthcoming. Mr. Awdry, who is a comparative stranger in this district, has been very unfortunate, having only a few weeks ago lost his wife, and now to lose his only son in such a tragic manner is particularly heartbreaking. It is presumed the boy was flaying with the dogs -with the open knife in his nana*, when by some mischance he was thrown down, and the knife penetrated his body. His calls for help, if he made any, would pass ■unheeded, as Mr. Awdry is rather deaf. An inquest is being held thla afternoon.
