THE PRICE OF BOOTS.
The relation of the price of leatheaj to the standardised boot "scheme is disn cussed in a letter forwarded by the New Zealand Boot Manufacturers' As-! sociation to the Minister in Charge of j the Board of Trade. After mentioning* J that the samples of standardised boots [ had not been inspected in Chri'stchurcft j owing to the epidemic, the letter pro* jceeds: "It would appear rhat the stain dardised boot scheme, to which the; ; Christchurch manufacturers show no hostility, was a war measure; but are bo'ots to be the only commodity stann dardised for price and quality? We: desire to bring under your notice the; fact that the price of sole leather im Australia has been fixed at Is BZO. pef, pound, whereas we fn New Zealand arej paying 2s 2d a pound. We are of opt* nion that the public is looking not only; for a standardised boot, but also for a substantial reduction in cost. This is! quite impossible, unless the price ol? leather is reduced. We should there* fore respectfully suggest that the price of leather be fixed by the Board 0$ Trade before anything is done concerning The manufacture or retailing oj the boots."
