CR. JOBLIN AND THE PRESS
AN ALLEGED INJUSTICE
At an early hour at the meeting of the Borough Council last night Cr.. Joblin inferred that the press did not treat him fairly in the matter of the suppl}- of limelight, remarking in an aggrieved voice: "Very little appears in the papers what I say.” We hasten to remove this reproach by reporting a IHlle incident which occurred later in the evening: While discussing the enormous rise in the wages of labouring men, Cr. Healey remarked that a man who was formerly getting 11s per day while in the employ of the Council was now drawing 16s 6d per day at a mill. Cr. Joblin: I have had to pay H>s per day for a man. Cr. Healey, -with an Irishman’s ready wit retorted: And it nearly broke your heart. The roar of laughter that went round the Council table drowned Cr. Joblin’s comparison between his “heart and Cr. Healey’s thick head.’" and the merriment was prolonged. His Worship, with a twinkle of fun in his eye, brought the councillors to a proper sense of decorum. Our reporter, owing to the laughter, was unable to catch what “Cr. Joblin did say,” but he has done the best he could under the circumstances.
