THE CAVALRY HORSES.
SALE AROUSES CRITICISM
LONDON, Jan. 2
The decision to sell General Alienay's horses locally is arousing strongcriticism among horse-lovers. Major-General Sir W. Birbeck, director of remounts, in an explanatory letter, says that the decision applies to the horss and mules of the Mesopotamia and Egyptian forces Repatriation is impossible, because every ship is required to bring food and raw material. The destruction is unthinkable of thousands of useful young‘Slilmals required by tho' local population for agriculture a.nd transport. There is no likelihood of ill-treatment in Syria, Palestine, or Egypt more than elsewhere; therefore the best thing is to sell locally.
Each (general has been given the; fullest discretion in the matter of destroying the animals.
,Experience shows that local people treat animals infinitely better than many Europans do, and it would be inhuman and wasteful to destroy animals: which are sorely needed to replenish depleted local stocks.
