A CATHEDRAL OF ART.

AN APPEAL TO BUSINESS MEN. Most succssful men of business have a desire to devote a portion of tM;Jr wealth to the encouragement, of the fine arts. The fact that they may have missed something of the softening and soothing benefits ol literature, music, painting, and sculpture ;s an incentive to broad-minded men to endeavour to bring the study of these things within the reach oi all, for 11-e uplifting of the people's thoughts and the good of the race. The opportunity ofcarrying out this worthy purpose is now offered in the proposal to nmid in Wellington, where St. Mark's Church stands, and Anglican Cathedral which will compare favourably with the most notable cathedrals of Great Britain and Europe. The new eathediai will be a repository of the history and traditions of the Domiaion. Among its treasures eventually will be buses of leading statesman, public men. aitists, poets and writers; and the nrmes of all New Zealand's sorliers who fell in the great war will be enshrined in golden letters on

marble tables in the Military Memorial Chapel. It is intended that the entire cathedral shall be built by the free-will offerings of a people filled with gratitude for the coming of peace. Contributions and promised sums may be spread over a period of five years, and Government Stock or War Bonds may be given. When the sum of £150,000 is in sight the building of the main part of the cathedral will be possible. A gift of £IO,OOO will build a tower, £7500 Avil build a transept. £6OOO the Galilee porch, £5000; the north-west porch 24.000; the organ, £3500; the morning chapel or the great cast window £2500 the rose window in the transept, The baptistry,- to cost £2OOO, is already promised, also eight .pillars at £IOOO each, but there are many pillars in the plan. £SOO will build an arch and lessor sums will provide less costly, though very important parts. The gift of any of. these carries with it the right of dedication of that portion of this cathedral of art. Intending contributors should communicate with the horn organising secretary, Rev. C. A.
