AN INFLUENZA EPISODE.
The influenza epidemic has been responsible for many stories both pathetic and humorous. One of the latter deals with a certain, native, living not 100 miles from Mt. Egmont. He and his family were down with the influenza, and the driver of the local hearse, who was a kind-hearted individual, after attending a funeral, pulled up outside the native's whare to inquire how the occupants were. As he approached, the door he was astounded to sec the native, who was supposed to be seriously ill, rush out in a terrible state of excitement. He was still more surprised when the native demanded to know in an angry ,ioue, what he wanted’. '‘What you bring that tam thing here for?” he yelled, pointing to the hearse. “I no komate yet. Take it away.” The astonished driver of the hearse, when he could get in a word, explained that he had only come to inquire after the native's health, adding: ‘lf you are not back into bed in ten seconds I will come for you the day after ‘tomorow without fail.” Hone, it is stated, bolted for bed like a “scalded cat,” and he did not get up for ten days, when he was completely well once more.
