ITALY AND THE WAR.
TRIBUTE TO BRITAIN. As stated by cablegram, Prince Colonna, Mayor of Rome, and the Chevalier Marconi were recently received in audience by the King at Buckingham Palace. In. the course of an interview subsequently, Prince Colonna said :—"The Italians recall with pride the grand struggle a former generation made 40 years ago. in the cause of liberty and nationhood. We recall, too, with never-fading gratitude, the sympathy extended by Great Britain to the patriots who fought with invincible courage under the leadership of Victor Emanuel, Cavour, Mazzini, and Garibaldi." "I am entrusted," Prince Colonna continued, "with the gratifying duty of conveying to 'the people of Great" Britain the warm fraternal greetings of Italy. It is our common hope and desire that the bonds of sympathy and comradeship which unite us in a,j sacred cause may be strengthened. "We are deeply touched by your, appreciation of Italy's effort to .help, in the attainment of ideas dear. both countries. Great as our sacrifices have been, and may yet be, we shall count them but small if the aims on which we have set our hearts be achieved.
"The spirit of Italy is undaunted. The people are strengthened by confidence, not only in the justice - of. the Allied cause, but also in its.ultimate triumph. We share the pride you must feel in the glorious, deeds of your army and in. the magnificent, work of your navy. We realise how immense is the debt the allied cause to Great Britain's supremacy on the sea."
