ELDERLY WOMAN’S DEATH. SON UNDER ARREST. WELLINGTON. Dee. 26 An elderly woman named Mrs. Grace Albrecht died in hospital on Monday, and on Christmas Eve her married sjon, Thomas Albrecht, tv as arrested on a charge of manslaughter. It is alleged that the son visited his mother’s house on the evening of December 4 while under the influence of drink, and, complained about the quality of the food placed before him A dispute followed, and it is stated that the son struck the mother, aged sixty, about the head and body. She fell down, and, after receiving medical attention, was removed to the hospital, where she died as stated.’

EXTENDING ITS OPERATION.

In order to extend the scope of the work done by the school medical service the Minister for Education has decided to increase the number of doctors and school nurses, and also to add four dentists to the staff and appoint medical and physical training branches as soon as equipment is available. The Minister hopes to establish a travelling dental clinic in one of the back country districts. The Minister further hopes that- some of the additional money voted for ’ assistance to the finances of school committees during the late session will be applied to the provision of cooking apparatus at some schools so that children who have to travel considerable distances may be given hot cocoa or soup, or even hot meals. The value of such provision in promoting the health and comfort of children is widely recognised in the United States and Canada.
