CONTROL OR MEAT TRADE. o— — POWERS OF THE MINISTER CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 20 Speaking at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Sir George Gifford, chairman of directors, said: —“I have to criticise an Act passed in recent breakneck session of Parliament, when much was done in haste which may have to be repented of at leisure. This Act purports to bring all persons or companies, engaged in> |lic meat export business under Government control. I have only sympathy with its intentions, but its w r hole operaton is left to the unfettered arbitrary discretion of the Minister for Agriculture. ProbabTy no company is less liable to Interference of this sort than our own; nevertheless, in the kaleidoscope of the Cabinet we may chance on a Minister for Agriculture who might fail to use his despotic powers with due sagacity.’ 5
