BOROUGH COUNCIL VACANCY
o MR.. J. R. CUNNINGHAME ELECTED. The vacancy on the Taihape Borough Council caused through the death of Cr. J. A. Champion was considered at the Council meeting last night. The Mayor said the influenza epidemic had caused many deaths among members of local bodies throughout New Zealand and this had induced the Government to place a clause in the “Washing Up Bill” that between' October Ist, 1918, /and April 30th, 1919, power could be given to appoint a duly qualified person to a vacancy on the Council. An election would cost £2O or £3O, and there were only a few months before the Council would expire through affluxion of time. Personally he thought the best solution was to find a man who had stood for office in the previous election. The first on the list /after those elected was Mr Needham, but he had gone to Te KuitL Next on the list was Mr J, R. Cunninghame, who, when seen, consented to act if elected. He movo(d, that Mr Cunninghame be eleetejd to the vacancy caused by the death of Ur. Champion. Cr. Joblin seconded the resolution, remarking that the Mayor’s action was a wise one, and the selection was the best that could be made.. The motion was carried, and Mr, J. E. Cunninghame was duly declared a member of the Taihape Borough Council.
