HEROIC RESCUE.
u A BURNING TANK. A remarkable story is told of the heroism of an American sergeant named Waaler in the recent fighting at Le Catelet. Waaler was in charge of a machine gun crew when he saw four wounded men lying out in the fire-swept open, Accompanied by two volunteers from his team, he went out and carried them in. One was a British tank officer whose tank had been set. on fire by a shell and who had broken his leg in escaping. The others were two British soldiers and an American non-commissioned officer. Learning from the wounded officer that there might still be people in the burning tank, Waaler went out alone, refusing fto let |pnybod,y .accompany him because of the risk. Dodging from cover to cover of the bullet-raked ground, he reached the blazing tank. With handkerchief to his nostrils he got into the interior. Here he found two living men incapable of helping themselves and one dead. With superhuman courage and devotion he got. them to a place of safety where stretcher-bearers could reach them.
