FOUND DEAD IN BED. AUCKLAND, this day. Captain William Wheeler, a medical officer on leave from Peatherston Camp, was found dead in bed at Te Aroha. FATAL TRAM ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND, this day. A man named George H. Kent, aged 88 years, was knocked down by a tramcar, and died in the hospital. DEATH OF JUDGE KETTLE. AUCKLAND, this day. Mr C. C. Kettle, formerly at Auckland, died to-day. i "* | WELLINGTON NEWS ITEMS. WELLINGTON, this day. The Parliamentary Committee's report on the deaths on the troopship was presented to the Minister of Defence. Sir James Allen has received a letter from a lance-corporal on the ship, speaking in good terms of the food, but stating towards the end of the voyage the bakers were all ill, and there was no fresh bread. There are still sixty influenza cases' in camp, nine serious. Experiments were made here in July, 1918, with the Pomeroy explosive mentioned in the cables. The inventor claimed one pound of his explosive equal to two pounds of black powder, and a six-inch shell would equal an ordinary twelve-inch. After the worst spring for many years the weather has" turned into real summer at last. Sir James Allen received a message stating the health of the wireless troops in Mesopotamia was generally good. The general officer commanding in Mesopotamia' sent to the captain of the troop a highly complimentary letter on its departure for France, ' thanking them for their excellent services, and stating all ranks had fully maintained and justified the high standard set by New Zealand troops in the war.
