Twelve fresh eases of influeriza were reported on Thursday at Karangahake, making a total of 40 for the second outbreak. Assistance has been sent from Thames.

Preparations for taking the licensing poll are already in hand. Though the date has not been fixed, a large amount of preliminary work has to be done, and it. is uncertain how far this will be - affected by the influenza epidemic.

T'.e New Zealand Free Lance Christmas Annual for 1918 comes as a good, seasonable tonic after the past trying weeks of the epidemic. It is just out and is bright and entertaining from cover to cover, and is thoroughly racy of the soil and redolent of the Christmas season. Its 56 pages arc profusely illustrated with amusing cartoons by leading artists and various stories and verse from the pens of well-known New Zealand writers. Amongst the pictures is a splendid double-page drawing in half-tone, entitled "The Eeturn of the Second Division: Daddy's Welcome Home," by D. H. Souter, the wellknown Sydney "Bulletin" artist. This 56-page Annual is published at one shilling. It is a holiday number that ought not to be missed, and is just the thing for posting - away to friends abroad.

The Auckland City Council has brought down a comprehensive scheme of municipal housing for workers, in which it is proposed to erect 224 houses in three city areas at a total cost of £165,850. It was recommended that the material should be brick or concrete for the external walls, and also for internal Avails wherever possible; rooms should be plastered and the floors of living-rooms, kitchens and bedrooms of wood; other floors to be of concrete of a smooth surfaee; roofs tiled or slated. The scheme was discussed, and the opinion was expressed by the Mayor that the rentals should be from 12/6 to 15/ per week. Ho stated that the question of the workers eventually acquiring the fee-simple would have to be considered. Further action was deferred until after the holidays.
