GERMAN WOMAN SPY.
Martha Wilhelmina Clara Earle, aged 65 years, was at the Old Bailey, sentenced to twelve months in the second division for collecting and communicating information which might bo useful to the enemy; attempting to communicate such information to a resident in Germany, and for possessing and using certain means for secretly communicating naval, military and air force information. At - the request of the military authorities, the case was ieard in camera. At the conclusion of the evidence Mr Justice Darling said j that the accused married >a Prussian I officer, and afterwards an Englishman. “Is it to be expected,” h e added, that when the woman was married to an Englishman she would divest herself of all German feelings?” The jury found the defendant guilty, and in passing sentence, Mr Justice Darling said that no one could help but feel "sorry for the prisoner, owing to . her age and illness. *
