The Influenza Epidemic.
AT AUCKLAND. On Friday there was one death in the Auckland Hospital and nine fresh cases were admitted. The improvement in the health of the city is still and the convalescents', are gradually going back to their homes. In some parts of the country district the posfTion is rather serious 'The position with regard to the Makura is still serious. A visit was paid to Motuihi Island on Friday afternoon by Dr. "Valintine, who again went down on Saturday. Every effort has been made to get ready the accommodation for the passengers ashore, but it was not till to-day that the New Zealand passengers were able to land, xirrangements have been made to place coal and water on the vessel, but this is being done under great difficulty, and when the time comes for the vesel to sail she will just be u.to make the voyage and no more, seaman named Denis McLeod died on Friday, and was buried at Motuihi. Up to date there have been 846 cases of influenza in Hokianga, with 115 deaths, 29 of them during the past week, mostly among the Maoris. Although the epidemic is pretty severe, there is a general improvement all Tound.
