FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT AT DANNEVIRKE. DANNEVIRKE, this day. A motor fatality occurred on the Dannevirke-Woodville road on Fridayevening. Mr." J. Winteringham, stockagent for the Pahiatua branch of the Wairarapa Farmers' Co-op Association, and formerly stock buyer in Dannevirke for the Waingawa Freezing. Works, was found dead in a creek beneath his car, which had crashed through the side of the bridge. Deceased was a single man. FIRE AT GEAR CO'S WORKS. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE. ■WELLINGTON, this day. An outbreak of fire occurred yesterday afternoon in the pressing department at the Gear Meat Co's. Works at. Petone, doing considerable damage to the two-storey building. The Company's own fire brigade and the Petone Fire Brigade suppressed the fiT©in half an hour. The damage will cause some inconvenience for a brief period. ; ' *'■' HOW DEFAULTERS STAND. WELLINGTON, this day. Since the Military Service Act was passed in April, 1916, men drawn in the ballots totalled 134,739, and of tSTs number 10,545 were classed as defaulters, 8498 have been secured, 683 are still under investigalion; 1364 are subjects of warrants in the hands of the police.
