PROGRESS OF THE ARMISTICE

The two waves of soldiery are moving to their destinations as provided by the Armistice, keeping the distance provided by • the terms of that document. Of these the first, the German wave has reached the Rhine, and is pouring through the Rhine towns, while the wave of the Allied forces is crossing the German frontier, leaving behind the French and Belgian territories freed after over four years of hostile occupation. The most notable incident in this migration which has replaced, and is the consequence of the hurling back of the German armies by the great strategy of Marshal Foch is the French entry into Strassburg. It requires but little imagination to realise the enthusiasm of the people, acclaiming him and General Castlenau, his chief staff officer. The conquerors of the battles of the Marne and of Nancy Conronnc in the first weeks of the war, reviewing a great French army in the neighbourhood of Strassburg and raking possession of the (ancient city! The sight was enough to send the population mad with joy. A parallel to this scene is the passage of King George through the Arc do Trompho in Paris (opened for the first time since the war of IS7O-71) in the presence of the enormous cheering crowd of Parisians.
