A SHATTERED ROMANCE.
> v THREE STRINGS TO HER BOW. I _ -p The story of a shattered modern romance of a varety not altogether k unheard of in recent times has come [ to the ears of an “Auckland Star” re- ► porter. It concerns a single man in a ? good position and the wife of a man recently deceased. It appears that the eligible man made the acquaintance of the lady in February, 1917. ► and she gave him to understand her r husband had been killed at the war. y They fell in love, and became euP gaged. The suitor, quite sincere in his intentions, having been transferred to a southern district, decided to provide his fiancee with a home. He secured a good house in the suburbs, L and furnished it with “made to order” <> ► oak furniture, his idea being that J when he married the woman on his r next annual holidays they would have a good home in which to commence a life of bliss. All went well and the lady had a £25 diamond ring and other jewellery, of which she appeared to be very proud. Affectionate let- ► ters were exchanged between the £ twain, and the man sent, at her re- * quest, regular amounts of money. f Some days ago the earnest lover was informed that his prospective bride * was not all she pretended to be, and that she was away from Auckland liv- ’ ing with another man in a country township. He immediately hit a trail | to make investigation, and soon learnt [ the truth. His fiancee was, indeed, living in' partnership with another r. man, who had been before the Court | to explain failure to maintain his lawp ful wife. Reaching the township L where his bride-to-be was said to have r been co-habiting for about four months, the now irate single man was informed that the “happy couple” was on holiday, apparently at his expense, in Auckland. Amongst quite a number of surprising facts he learnt that the husband of his erring sweetheart wsa alive up till October last, i He is now seeking to recover some thirty or forty pounds’ worth of jewellery and a big lump of “true love” money a -wanting to upwards of £IOO.
