FUTURE OF HUNGARY.

The Vienna Zeit recently described the great change that had happened, in Hungarian economic life due to the new impulse given by the war to Hungarian industries, especially machinery and electro-technics. It said that Hungary would never again be as before the war, 70 per cent, peasants and II per cent, operatives. There was a great future before the Hungarian industries. The Hungarian were trying by high salaries to attract the best Austrian workmen. This was a great loss to Austria, which, as Hungarian industries developed, was losing her best markets. To this a Hungarian paper replies:—Such are the lamentations of the Vienna journal, which, after all, are in a certain sense perfectly right. Hungary during the war has assisted in the destruction of. her own national patrimony. In spite, however, of this enormous loss she has gained something. She has gained particularly in experience, because, abased almost to the level of a mere colony, she has finally realised what riches her territory contains. The idea of economic independence has at last made headway through the whole of our country. Hungary means no longer to play the part of a simple furnisher of products of tlic soil and raw materials which Austria then works up for herself, taking all the profit. Hungary is advancing to a great change, in that Vienna journal is quite right. But the sorrow of the Austrians to-day no longer moves us. For several centuries the Austrians have lorded it over and despoiled us. Now, perhaps, we shall be able to repay them a few of the benefits of which they were so lavish towards us.
