DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the. Taihape District High School Committee was held, on Monday night, Present: Mesdames Do Latour, McCormick Mawson, and Messrs. Champion (chairman) Shannon, Burrell and Lovell. A letter was received from the Education Board stating that all works in connection with school buildings for which the B'oard would be asked to pay would first have to be authorised by the Board, otherwise payment would be withheld. As this had no reference to the local committee the letter was received.
The School Committee’s Asociation. Palmerston, wrote suggesting the holding of a united schools picnic and sports, at which selected competitions from schools would take part. The opinion of the local Committee was that the distance from Taihape was too great and no action was taken.
Th same Association wrote asking the Committee’s support in an effort towards increasing the education vote to £3,000,000, offering greater inducements to young people to enter the teaching profession, also that the teachers’ salaries generally should be in keeping with the importance of their work. It was decided to support any effort in the direction indicated, and action is to be taken through the member of the district.
The Headmaster’s report was read, showing that the attendance had not altered much since his last report, although the average is not very good o’-lng to sickness, chiefly colds and influenza. The children have started practising for the school ball to be held on November 22nd. and Misses McDonell and Gordon have undertaken the positions of joint secretaries. The School Committee was asked to undertake the management of the supper, the dOors ? the floor, the adult portion of the programme, an dto help in the sale of tickets.
A meeting of lady residents of the town is to be held in Technical School on Friday at 3 p.m., to make arrange-1 ments about the supper. When the accounts came up for payment the secretary stated that owing to improvements to the grounds and buildings the funds of the committee were getting low. This was further aggravated by the excessively high cost of everything required. During the discussion that ensued it was stated that the annual capitation allowance received was only sufficient to pay for firewood and school cleaning leaving the committee to find money to carry on the school and make improvements to the grounds. There were a number of improvements in contemplation which 'only lack <pf funds prevented being carried out. Messrs Burrell and Lovell were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing mouth, and the meeting adjourned
