SEEGEANT iLESTEE DAVEY. Mr. and Mrs. James Davey, Miller's road, Dannevirke, have received the sad news that their youngest son, Sergeant Lester Alton Davey, was killed in action on October sth in France. This young soldier, who was 24 years of age, left New Zealand with the Eighth as also did his brother Walter. Sergeant Lester Davey was wounded in the buttock in the Somme Battle 1916. Last November whilst acting as bomb instructor at Codford, a bomb exploded and badly damaged his right hand. Before leaving for France, a short while ago he was in a training school for non-commissioned officers for three weeks. Fifty soldiers were picked to attend this school —45 Tommies and five New Zealanders, Sergeant

Wherever there was sport of any kind Sergeant Lester Davey was sure to be there. “Dick,” as he was called by his was well liked and respected, and the sympathy of all will go out to Mr, and Mrs. Davey in their sad loss. Sergeant Lester Davey was a Dannevirke boy, being born .in Miller’s Road, and he could have returned to New Zealand 18 months ago, but 'preferred ito remain with his mates, and see; it through. Private “Jim” Mills, who was killed in action on October (4th, 1917,. was a grandson of Mr and Mrs .Davey. Sergeant Davey was a brother of Messrs, J. T. Davey, of Taihape, and R, A. Davey sawmiller,.. of Mataroa, and was the youngest member of a family

of fourteen. Sergeant Davey had a host of 'friends in Taihape. who will be grieved to hear of his death.
