TURKEY'S SURRENDER.
CELEBRATED IN" TAIBTAPE. After this journal went to press yesterday further celebration of Turkey's unconditional surrender took place. What the recruiting sergeant' had. left of the Municipal Brass Band, with- a few oldtime .bandsmen pressed into the service, met and paraded the Main Street, playing inspiriting military marches, followed by quite an army of the small boy element, with kerosene tins and any other available adjunct to noise-making. A halt was called at : the Town Hall, where the Mayor, 'supported by Councillors and citizens, made his appearance on the balcony. A great crowd had collected in expectation of speeches and they were not disappointed. The Mayor delivered an extremely patriotic oration which the crowd liberally punctuated with applause drawn from brass instruments, drums, kerosene, tins as well as vocally. In conclusion he complimented the Band on the rapidity of its mobilisation, and on the ready response it had made to the greatness of the occasion. He hoped the bandsmen ■would hold together so- as to be ready for still greater occasions; he wanted to see the band successful, and the town wanted the band. He was pleased with what part it had taken in celebrating the joyful news that had that day come to hand. Mr. J. P. Aldridge, Cr. Wrightson and Cr. Joblin also spoke and received a most enthusiastic hearing. Captain Neely, a returned soldier, addressed the gathering from the viewpoint of the returned fighting men, after which "God Save the King" was sung with ■brass band accompanying and the gathering dispersed, led by band which again played through the street.
