THE BIG CANADIAN.

James Simpson, wno addresses .the mass meeting of citizens, is one of the big men of Canada. His audiences in the early days were the handful of people he could gather round him at the street corners, to-day he sways big multitudes in the biggest buildings. So provocative of opposition were James Simpson’s views on labour and liquor in his early days that he was frequently pelted with eggs. But he had a big heart and extraordinary ability. By doggedness, wonderful oratorical powers and a mind of great mental depth oh local and provincial questions, rung by rung of the ladder he climbed in the labour movement of Canada, until to-day he is one of the really big men, vice-chair-man of the great Canadian Trades and Labour Congress. New Zealand quickly perceived the bigness of tbe man, for huge audiences everywhere have listened to his mighty utterances on labour and liquor, the titles of his address.
