Turkey’s Surrender.
TURKISH ARMY SURRENDERS Received 2 p.m. LONDON, October 31. The whole Turkish, aimies on the Tigris front have surrendered. * A BURST OF ENTHUSIASM. o TAjIHAPE! PEOPLE JUBILATE. A HOLIDAY PROCLAIMED. This afternoon people were startled by a vigorous ringing of the firebell, and a large crowd gathered in the square in a very few minutes. The cause of excitement was traceable to the Mayor, Mr. Arrowsmith, who, with a telegram from the Prime Minister, announced that Turkey had unconditionally surrendered; that the Dardanelles were now open to British ships, and that fighting with Turkey had ceased. In honour of the occasion he asked them on behalf of the Prime Minister to observe a close holiday for the remainder of the day. An amazingly ready response was signified by deafening cheers and shouts. All* business was almost at a standstill; cheers and counter cheers were given, and within a few minutes all the kerosene tins in the town were being vigorously rattled by bands of beys, brass instruments were blown, the cosmopolitan bizarre concourse stopping at the Gretna, rendering a most up-to-date serenade, where we left them on going to Press.
