FRENCH ARTILLERY. The war has produced a remarkable development in artilleia construction, and the Allies have tJJ ned out gun» as large as the biggest German production, and have even surpassed ft, though it is only recently that the world has been told something about the achievements of 'Allied artillerists. The French Ministry of War recently issued a series of films, intended for propaganda work in foreign countries, showing the Creusot 520mm. (20.4 in) gun, which was built to ~J demolish the massive German field fortifications. This gun is larger In the bore by 3in than the famous Krupp "Fat Bertha," as the 17in howitzer was styled, and its shell is of enormous weight. The 20.4 in monster possesses a high degree of mobility, and has undoubtedly caused terrible damage to the enemy. One oeits earliest feats was the destruction of Fort Malmaison. north-east of Solasons, which the Germans had spenr months in fortifying. When finished it was considered to be proof agains-s prolonged bombardment by the heaviest guns. One day, however, the 20.*in Creusot was brought into position, and fired a single shell, which lancer squarely en Malmaison. Eye-witness-es declare that the burst was like Vesuvius in eruption. When the smoXc cleared away it was seen that the fort had been absolutely wiped out, together with its garrison. Our French arlies have, in fact, built not only tn? largest, but apparently the most effective piece of artillery in existence.
