'' ' NORTH S 3 A E£IT. : THE GREAT MINE BARRAGE V NE WYORK, October 29. The New York Times' Washington correspondent states that Mr J. Daniels (Secretary to the Navy) announced that more than 250,000 mine were laid in the great anti-submarine minefield across the the North Sea from the Norwegian coast to.within a few miles of Scotland.', The British, and American navies co-operated. This mine barrage proved a most effective measure' against U-boats. A mine-loading plant had been established, with a capacity of more than 1,000 mines daily-. This minefield was the greatest in the world's history. Mr Daniels said. "The success of the special type of mine used surpassed all expectations."
