•Instancing that pupils in , State schools were taught a lot of things that were useless to theni in after-life the Rev. W. G. Monckton, speaking on the subject at the Auckland Synod on Monday evening, said that 99 out of every 100 did not use arithmetic in life. Women, he said, made practically no use of it at all, and mental arithmetic was the bane of their lives. A woman went into a butcher's shop, added the speaker, and was told that sausages were 9d per lb. She would take three lbs. and put down 2/6, which the butcher would sweep into his till and say, "Thank you," and the woman would go quite satisfied. (Laughter.)
A well known Invercargill musician soldier, writing from one of the largest training camps in the world situated in England, mentions that 10,000 German prisoners are at present interned near where the New Zealanders are located, and that they arc particularly well fed and housed. He says that when it was announced recently that arrangements had been made with Germany for an exchange of prisoners and volunteers were called for from the ranks of the Huns to return to the Fatherland, only about 50 men stood forth from the great body of internees. The young cornetist from Southland suggests that "the Germans will have to be introduced to the ballot system to start a sufficient number on the way home."
