TENNIS.
OFFICIAL OPENING. The official opening of tEe Taihape Tennis Club’s courts took place yesterday afternoon, in beautiful weather. The courts were graced by the presence of a large number of lady visitors, there being including players over fifty persons present. Taken ali through, the indications point to a most successful season and are very encouraging to the committee who have struggled the last few seasons to keep the game alive. Afternoon tea was supplied by the ladies of the club and was presided over by Mrs. P. E. Wakeman, assistecTby Miss Spooner. The courts were officially opened t>.\ 3 p.m. by Mr, P. E. Wakeman, president, and were continuously occupied up till dark. Amongst the new members show goo form was Miss M. Williams, D. Bray, and Messrs M. McLaughr P R. Booth, Rev. Hocking, and A. Up- 1 church.
A prize of a racket has been donar ed by Mr. P. E. Wakeman to the most Improved lady player joining the clulthis season. It is hoped this ■will be an inducement to lady beginners to adopt the adage, “practice makes perfect.” The following new members have been elected: —Misses M. Williams, A. Spooner, L, Spooner, and Messrs F, R Booth, W. Pnii, C. Bennett, and Father Bergen.
