Blackall got a first stake at Dannevirke through the winner being disqualified. At Dunedin Nocturnal (a full brother) was similarly fortunate. Sleepyhead, a Dunedin winner, was bred at Waikanae, by Birkenhead, and is the first foal of Somniform (Boni-form-Dreamer), a full sister to Bon Reve. Sleepyhead is a three-year-old and did not race last season. Trainers R. J. Mason and R. O'Donnell and Jockey B. Deeley were among the New Zealand contingent that arrived back from Sydney this week. Mason is suffering from influenza, and Gloaming will go out to Trentham in charge of Deeley. A three-year-old full sister and a two-year-old full brother to Indigo are Included in R. Goosenian’s Hastings team.
Some comment has been made in sporting circles on the fact that the Sydney horseman W. H. McLachlan had the mount on Estland in the A.J. C. Randwick Plate on Saturday, instead of 3. O'Shea. Although no information is to hand, it will probably be found that McLachlan was engaged for Estland when Desert Gold was also in the race, and, naturally, O’Shea would be on the latter. Her withdrawal would leave O’Shea without a mount, and the luck came McLachlan’s way.—" Whalebone.”
