SHOP CLOSING HOURS.
To the Editor. Sir,—lt is witE" impatience I have waited for some abler pen than mine to take' np the subject re the business houses closing at '5.30 p.m. At a meeting of the Tradesmen's Association, it was decided by a large majority to close the business premises at 5.30 every evening, and 12 o'clock on Thursdays, yet several of the business houses continue to keep their assistants employed until 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. Why is this so, Mr. Editor? Surely it is not the greed of gain. Are these people thinking of the few paltry shillings they are taking, after the others close, at the expense of their employers? Auckland and Wellington in certain business houses are now closing all day on Saturday, showing they are considering their employees. Now, Mr. Editor if these people won't fall into line with their more considerate fellowtradesmen I think it is time Labour here and showed their and assisted their more unfortunate comrades.—l am, etc., LABOUR.
