SEAMAN DROWNED. AUCKLAND, this day Wiliam Farrow, a steamers fireman, aged 26, fell from the ship's gangway, and was drowned. A companion who fell with Farrow was rescued. STRIKE AT NIGHTCAPS. ARRIVAL OF MASSEY AND WARD. AITCKLAND. this day. The "Niagara" arived at 10.30 and berthed at the Queen's Wharf. The visiting Ministers and local authorities assembled on the wharf but dlo not board the steamer in consequence of the reported outbreak of Spanish influenza aboard. Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward are well, but it will be some hours before they land as vesse* has. to be thoroughly fumigated before anyone is allowed to leave. SERIOUS MOTOR ACCIDENT. HAWERA, this day. A serious motor accident occurred near Normanby dairy factory early this morning. It appears that G. Russell, a taxi proprietor, was motoring with a party of inine from Eltham to Hawera after a dance, when one of the back tyres blew out, followed by a succession of blow-outs, causing the car to overbalance and overturn, and, completeing a somersault, righted itself. Fortunately the occupants were thrown clear, but all were ; somewhat injured. Those brought to the Hawera Hospital are: Misses Ada Dunn, right collarbone broken; Marion Dunn both collarbones broken; Miss Turner, right foot injuries; G. Russell, driver of car, injuries to face. He will be- able.to be removed to his home after receiving attention. Whittaker received mostly head bruises. All the patients are doing as well as can ne expected. The others, who were taken to Mrs. Walsh's hotel, NormanDy, are Miss Madge Dunn, unconscious; Miss Walshe, Miss O'Connor, and Miss Long; all three are suffering from shock and bruises. Arrangements were to be made to bring Miss Dunn to the hospital, but she is still unconscious this morning. The car was considerably damaged. The hood was down, and this saved more serious results. SEDITIOUS UTTERANCE. WAIROA, (H. 8.), Oct. 10. A station manager, T. Romley, appeared at the Magistrate's Court today on a charge of having uttered a seditious statement in a private Far in the Wairoa Hotel, as follows:-—"I hope the Huns will come here and beat you .and Massey. A crowd of Huns would make as good bosses as !'' naming a local farmer. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was fined £SO and costs £4 Bs.
