ILLEGAL BETTING. TOBACCONIST, FINED. DANNEVIRKE,- this day. William Drinkwater, hairdresser and tobacconist, was fined £2O ana £lO respectively on two charges of illegally betting on his premises. He had a previous conviction for a similar offence two years ago at New Plymouth. ;■.£, TARANAKI BY-ELECTION. LABOUR WINS AGAIN. MR .SMITH ELECTED. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct 10. The Taranaki by-election • was held to-day, and evoked considerable interest. The result was: — Sydney Smith (Democratic Labour) 2840 J. B. It is stated the trouble will not interfere with the preparation of the chamber for the Parliamentary Session, but the men are restive owing to the uneertaintyy whe ther work be suspended during the session. The Minister of Public Works however, says the work will go on without interruption. . ■

The Mayor of Auckland had arranged for ia public reception to Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward on their return from England, but Sir James Allen, while thanking him for the proposal, requested that in order to fit in with other ministerial arrangements the reception be deferred till another occasion.
