WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1918 THE PERFIDIOUS HOHENZOLLERN.
(With which is Incorporated The .Taihape Post and Walnrattao News)..
The full test of the'Kaiser's peace on liberal terms was cabled to New Zealand yesterday, and after reading them we cannot be deemed unjust to their author in venturing the opinion that he knew they were foredoomed to scornful rejection; that they were couched in dishonesty and framed with insincerity. They were never written as peace proposals for serious consideration by the Allies; they are merely a part of that campaign of lying by which the German populace have all along been cheated and deceived; been led into misery, degradation >and death .that the house of Hohcnzollern might attempt to prove its divine right to rule the world; that divine right as understood by the Prussian military machine and th'o might of brute force are interchangeable terms. The scientific brute force, alias divine right, has failed and the Hohenzol-
lern's have not the courage to admit it, and the peace on liberal terms was framed with the object and for the purpose of putting blame for the failure on the German people and the German soldiers and sailors, that the pestilent Hohenzollerii skin might pass whole through the ordeal of the unconditional surrender that one already scents in the a"ir. There are hundreds of German military officers, recently put into prison compounds, who are what we commonly term sports; men who frankly admit what Germany went to war for; that the game is lost, and that nothing remains for them bu to suffer the consequences, but that mean, execrable, pestilential thing, the house of Hohenzollern, who conceived, planned and put into execution the most damnable scheme for life ; destruction, tries to shift -the sin- from its shoulders on to the innocent and deluded German ; people while pretending to effect a scheme on their behalf fox ending the war. The Kaiser, when he read his proclamation, know that he was'a deliberately lying skunk; without a qualm of conscience he unhesi- ; tatingly lied to his people who were | barely able to hang on to life for want iof food, whose sons, husbands and fathers had been destroyed in the great military machine of the Hohenzollerns in millions; his object was to dishonestly placate his people while he loaded them with all the responsibility of losing the war for Germany. No Allied people will be surprised, for this last act is merely characteristic, of Hohenzollern tactics uniformly planned and followed from the-first days when ("the war' was being : engineered. ' - In' peace proposals, it is pointed' out, a 1 precedent has been established in' the case of Bulgaria; «ny appeal for an armistice must be preceded by an i unconditional surrender. Nothing less will bo acceptable to the Allies; the j death sentence of Prussian Militarism I has been delivered from the bench of j the world, a judgment which admits J of no form of reprieve, even for one minute. The liberal terms are not discussable, the mendacity of them is not consistent with cool deliberation. Belgium will be rehabilitated by its destroyers, not by any international fund; the Brest iLitovsk farce, begotten in corruption, the Allies will not touch only to blow it to dust with their guns, and thereby for ever prevent its further pollution of tjha earth. Brother Jonathan has correctly diagnosed the case and when he saw the desolation in Belgium, France, Serbia, Eoumania, Albania and Italy, he realised an evil thing that the only escape from was its utter destruction • and extinction. He is of opinion that it should return territories forcibly taken from Italy and from France in previous wars of aggression and ho has said that Germany must disgorge the five thousand millions of francs that the Hohenzollerns exacted from the French as indemnity in the war of | 1870. Truly, chickens of the German ! brood are going homo to roost. It is unprofitable, however, to go on discussing the latest dishonest Prussian act; I the only way it can operate towards peace is that it makes it possible for the German people to understand that the terms of peace will not be allowed to originate with the Hohenzollerns, or come from their country at all. They will be made aware that they are to continue the fight until they are in the temper to accept the Allies' terms, which unalterably are, unconditional surrender.
