A NIGHT RAID.
IN PURSUIT OF DESERTERS. A few days a party of military and civil police left Masterton for the hackhlocks in pursuit of certain military deserters who were reported to he hovering round the district. They made their way stealthily to a certain rendezvous which is licensed to retail spirituous and other liquors. Here the deserters were supposed to be resting their weary limbs prior to departing for the scrub camp in the back The police surrounded the building, and the official in charge made his •way into the premises. The owner, scenting burglars or something else, crept out of a side door with his boots in his hands. He was immediately called upon to “halt!” This he refused to do, but when bailed up he dropped his boots, raised his hands, and is said to have muttered something like “Kamerad!” Explanations were made, the house was searched, but all that was discovered was a harmless Scandinavian who was on his honeymoon
