GLOAMING’S VICTORY. Sydney papers now to bana bring ful details of the victory registered by Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s colt In the Cheslmsford Stakes run at Randwick on the 14th inst. On all hands the brilliancy of Gloaming’s win is recognised, and it is voted a remarkable galloping feat. In referring to the race “Milroy,” of the Sydney Mail, wrote as follows:—-The Chelmsford Stakes running has often been sadly deceptive, but there was nothing deceiving about the manner in which Gloaming spread-eagled bis-field. Gloaming had not raced previously, but he had shown extraordinary ability in his gallops with Biplane, and the public with goo'd judgment followed the trainer loyally, and made Gloaming second favourite.. Gloaming, ridden by D. O’Connor, slewed half-round when the word was given, and lost fully eight lengths at the start, but h« was up with the field at the halfmile, and won “running away,” as the Americans put it, ' by seven lengths from Rebus'who was length in front Of Kennaquhair and Lingle; and the best placed of the others were The Destroyer, Sweet Lady, Dick Meagher,, and Estlahd. It whs the most decisive win I can recall in the history of the Chelmsford Stakes, and when Gloaming pulled up everybody wanted to back him for the Derby, for which he was at a long price a day earlier. Gloaming ran the nine furlongs in 1m 52s —an Australian • record—off which he could at least have knocked another second had he been stretched right out. Gloaming Is a fine, hig, shapely gelding and a beautiful mover. He looks the best- three year old we have, and if be acts up to expectations it will be a coincidence that the best three-year-old of successive years were bred in Victoria and trained in New Zealand by Mason.
