Wellington Central’s electorate, in the opinion of the Wellington correspondent of the Hawke’s B'ay Herald, is the hotbed of Bolshevism in New Zealand.
In accodance wih the new regulation gazetted on September 3 the hotels in Wellington, and within a radius of 15 miles were closed from 9 a.m. until 2.80 p.m < on Monday on the occasion of the arrival of returning troops.
It is a striking commentary on the demand for land in the vicinity of Levin (says the Chronicle) that in the past three months over £150,000 has been paid at auction for blocks embraced by a ten mile radius from the town.
The motor equipment of an American army division has been fixed at four closed cars, three seven passenger cars, 10 light cars, 112 motor cycles, 10 light motor trucks and 331 3ton lorries. When the American army in France gets up to full strength the automobiles incorporated in the same will run into some amazing figures.
Details of a revolver fight between anarchists and police at Dacca have just reached Calcutta. A force of police raided a house suspected of being the hiding place of anarchists, and three young men opened fire on them. The police, in self defence returned their fire, and one anarchist was killed on the spot another wounded and died later, and third secured. A police constable was killed and a detective inspector wounded both the latter being Indians. Important cypher papers were found in the house.
Details of the coalminers’ ballot upon the question as to whether the offer of the Coal Minors’ Association of an increase of 74 per cent to piece -workers and 10 per cent to wages men should be accepted, show that 1724 votes were cast in favour of the proposal, and 862 against it.
Among the -working classes in Ireland (writes a Daily r Chronicle correspondent) gambling has run riot. The police are earning enormous wages, and ■a liberal proportion is speculated on racing and football matches. Even servant maids and shsp girls have become patrons of the bookmaker. Three card men are doing a roaring trade, and offer to bet in £5 and £lO notes with their dupes. A group of quay labourers recently lost over £2O in as many minutes. So bold are the three card men that in some instances they set up their stands in the principal strees in open daylight.
