FIVE MONTHS' REVENUE
£705,961 INCREASE ON 1917. J> ■ ~ \ DROP IN AUGUST OF £74,496. The Hon. Arthur Myers (ActingMinister for Finance,) furnished yesterday the following particulars relating to the revenue and expenditure for the five months ended August 31st 191 S, as compared with the similar period of 1917; also particulars as to the revenue for the month?- of Auggust, 191 S and 1917 respectively; and for the twelve months ended August 31st 1918, as compared with the same period ending August 31st, 1917. Commenting on the figures, MrMyers stated that it would be observed: that the revenue for the five months; of this year was in excess of the "corresponding period of last year by £765,961. The comparison for' the months of August alone, however, showed that the total revenue for August, 19.15, was less than that for August, 1917, by £74.496. INCREASE EXPENDITURE . £1,124,934. . j;] On the other hand, the expenditure out of the ordinary revenue account for this year compared with the five months of the previous year showed an increase of £1,124,934. "It is found, therefore," conti™ded the Minister "that the ratio offm- c crease in expenditure is greater than f* the ratio of increase in revenue. This condition of affairs, of course, is to be expected because of the increase in the interest fc-n:<s < sinking fund; and pensions, and the corersponding decrease on the revenue side owing to the lack of shipping facilities."
