MILITARY SERVICE.
APPEAL BOARD AT MARTON. The First Welington Military Service Baord, comprising Messrs D. cr. A. Cooper, S.M. (chairman), D. McLaren, and T. Young, held a sitting at Marion on Tuesday, when a fairly substantial list of appeals was dealt with. iWm. Millan ,sawmill hand, Plihitahi, Taihape.—Adjourned from July 23 in order that the appellant might produce the birth certificates of three children declared to be his. The certificates were forthcoming. The appeal was allowed.
James Stodart, soldier on active service.—Aplication for return to New Zealand. The father asked that a month’s leave of absence be granted to his son, in order that he might return to transact private business. The Board had no recommendation to make.
William Luke Morris, Taihape, returned soldier. —Application for extensiori'of leave. The appellant stated that he was a gunner In the 2nd Brigade, and was on special leave, arriving in New Zealand on March 15. He asked that leave be granted indefinitely. He left with the Main Body in 'October, 1914, and served three years and 11 months. His father was 66 years of age, and was blind. His mothem was 65 years of age. A brother had been attached to/ the Grenadier Guards, but was killed at the Somme. He had another brother who had lost a leg at Loos. The latter brother tvas married, with three children. Appellant had been in action with his battery until August last. —The Board agreed to recommend indefinite leave.
Francis John G. Thompson, tailor, Mangaweka.—Adjourned from July 23 to enable him to communicate with the Financial Assistance Board. Reply was produced. His application for financial assistance embraced life insurance and rent. He was not satisfied witli the reply. When asked by the chairman as to the reason for his dissatisfaction, he Could supply no answer. ' In reply to Captain. Baldwin, the appellant admitted that he was a single man, and had been called up Th February, 1917. The appellant’s mothiST gave evidence, after which decision was reserved. Subsequently the appeal was dismissed, and the reservist was ordered into camp with the November draft.
Wynfred Vincent Kelsall, order clerk, Taihape.—-Adjourned from July 23 to ascertain what financial "aid the Financial Board were willing to give. Appellant stated that he was not satisfied with the rent offer of 5s a week. He was now paying 15s a week for rooms, which would have to be given up if a successor were appointed. He only wanted leave until October. The Board considered the appellants position, and granted leave until February. David J. Parsons, fireman, N.Z.R., Taihape.—Adjourned from July 23 to ascertain what help the Financial Assistance Board would give. Appellant submitted the reply* and said he was not satisfied with the amount of rent assistance offered. —Decision was reserved. Subsequently the appeal was dismissed and appellant was ordered into camp with the- November draft.
James S- Watson, brick manufacturer, Taihape.—Employer’s appeal.—'Adjourned until the November sitting. Charles Bert Cox, labourer, Utiku. — No appearance. Appeal dismissed. Ernest Bougen (Mr Christensen), farrier, Taihape—Adjourned from July 23. Appellant stated that he had offered his business for sale in Wellington and Auckland, but had received no replies. Decision was reserved sine die.
John Murray boot factory, Taihape, —Adjourned for re-classification.
Joseph Wham, grocer, Taihape—Adjoined to Wellington. Patrick McCann, farmer and shearer, Euanui, Taihape—Appellant stated that he had a farm in the King Country Avhich he had owned for about two and a half years. Ho had about 15 acres now down in grass. He helped Ms father at Euanui. His father had five hundred sheep and twenty head of cattle. Appellant and a younger brother -were the only employers on the farm. His father was unable to work. Witness was 20 years of age. To Captain Baldwin: He'had drawn the section at Otohoronga in the ballot. Personally he would like to go to the war, but he did not wish to lose his section.
The Chairman explained that arrangements could be made to secure the holding in the King Country. Appellant said he was a shearer. The chairman: You go into camp with the November draft.
Appellant; B\it I want time until after shearing.
The chairman; My boy, you have had all the time you will get. Go to camp in November.
Henry McDowall, farm manager (Mr Miles), Taihape—Appellant was employed by Mr G. L. Marshall, and worked a property comprising a thousand acres. Mr. Marshall gave evidence in support of the appeal. It was he said, against his principles to ap-
peal, but in view of the approaching shearing season he thought it was in the interests of the country that stfeh men as McDowell should be left. HjJßf had no doubt he would be able tW carry on, but he would ask that the appellant be kept back until February., , Leave was granted until February. James Hastio Belli&s. farmer. Tai- *** hape.—Employer’s appeal. Decision, reserved sine die. James Christopher Crowe, farmer, Taihape. Undue hardship. Decision, reserved sine die. Herbert John Broughton (Mr Gascoigne), grocer, Taihape.—Undue hardship. Hp stated that he put £750 into his business, and he would lose, his all if he went to the war. He now carried r about £I7OO worth of stock. He had $5; tried to dispose of his stores but without success. Ho and his wife worked very long hours. He had not tried insecure a manager, because he did not think the business could run one. Adjourned to the November sitting. Thos. Gill, Utiku.—Adjourned from June 27 Further adjourned until the next sitting. F W. Scott, engine-driver, Taihape — Withdrawn.
