FIRE IN FEILDING. FOXTON, this day. Whyte 's Hotel, a wooden building, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday evening. The fire spread from an 'adjoining brick building occupied by Mr Barr, draper, Wanklyn's billiard room,. Wall J s bakery, and Teviotdale. This building, with the exception of the walls of the bakery was totally destroyed, Both buildings \\..eve owned by F. S. Eaton. There was no insurance on the brick building; insurance ion the hotel is £2OOO, contents £1343; Barr, stock £2100; Wanklyn, £350; Teviot'dale, £l5O. ..:.,, .....FATAL TRAP ACCIDENT. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Rita Robson, aged seventeen, was knocked down-on Saturday by a horse and gig driven by William E. McKenna stock agent. She was taken to the hospital, but died yesterday.
DEAD BODY FOTJK"D. ■•■' > ■ AUCKLAND, this day. The dead body of Phillip A. E. Sydney, aged 19, was found in Manakau harbour. He is believed to be a farm labourer, missing since August 22. MARTON FARMER SUICIDES. - WHILE UNDER MENTAL DEPRESSION. , V ■ ' MARTON, this day. A farmer, Frank Pope, afed 35, cut his throat on Saturday afternoon. He leaves a widow and four children. At an inquest heia yesterday the verdict was suicide due to mentar depression through alcoholic indulgence. COAL STRIKE FIZZLES OUT. . WESTPORT, this day. The so-called strike has fizzled out, and all mines are working to-Say. The coal expert last week was three thousan tons, compared with an average of sixteen thousand. An apprentice, Charles Levy, got entangled in the belting of Rileys foundry, and had a miraculous eseapt from death.
