ENGLAND’S CROP AREA.
LONDON, August 28
The Board of Agriculture reports that the arable area in England is now 12,400,000 acres, an increase of 1,150,000 acres compared with 1917, and a record for twenty years. The wheat acreage increased by 638,000 acres, oats by 23 per cent, and potatoes by 25 per cent.
AIR MINISTER APPOINTED. A SIBERIAN SURPRISE. Received 9.15 a.m. WASHINGTON, August 28. War Secretary Baker has announced that Mr. John Ryan has been iappointed Assistant Secretary for War, . with responsibility for the Army Air Service. This is practically tantamount to beng appointed Air Minister. Yladivostock news states that General Ploshkoff, )acting oh behalf of Harvath, the Anti-Bolshevik leader, assumed the control of Russian military forces in the Far East by a coup d’etat. The Siberian Government was nonplussed at the suddenness of the movement 'and. was unable to organise opposition.
