RETREAT CAUSES PANIC. London, August 12. According to Swiss reports, the German retreat is producing In Germany an impression bordering on panic. JThe people no longer trust LudendJffTs evasive and mendafcious communiques. Hindenburg is rellitering the arena. He has urged the Kaiser and Ludeudorff to adopt an entirely new plan of campaign.
It is believed that the Germans contemplate the early abandonment of tne whole of the salients from Ypres to Verdun. An Amsterdam telegram states that the three German generals serving in the Montdidier region were degraded owing to their neglect.
The Kolnische Zeitung declares that lost a not inconsiderable number of prisoners and guns, without, so fa>-, other serious consequences. It remains to be seen whether the situation has changed strategically . The Kolnische eZitung declares that the reasons for the regrettable occurrences have not yet been cleared up. The Cologne Volks Zeitung says: It is no good hiding the fact that this check south of the Somme by an enemy not numerically superior' hits us hard. *~ ' '
The Vossiche Zeitung says: The least vulnerable point of our front was attacked, therefore it is ridiculous to say that our entire position is menaced. When Hindenburg has Sonsol!dated the Aisne—Vesle front, he wi"l be able freely to shift reserves t-> every menaced point.
