BAYLEY.
Some breezy descriptive matter was indulged in by the "Dannevirke Newl 5 * in reporting the meeting addressed by W. D. Bayley, 8.A., who speaks here next Monday. "Put W. D. Bayley r vice president of the Winnepeg Labour Council, and teacher of Economics arid History at the Collegiate Institute there, on the door of.an hotel and he would look like a prosperous Boniface —stumpy, round faced, well con> plexioned, and red-headed. Put him on a platform in front of an audience and he speedily proves himself a destructive critic of the business—a forceful, lueld, reasoning 'speaker, one who doe§ not try to impress by rant and cant, but one who emphasises byfact, and who appeals in such a manner that his prominence in the movement is thus easily explained." The fact that Mr. Bayley is red-headed led him to say: "The trade tried to draw red herrings across the trail, but they could not fool a sensible community with red herrings—especially a redheaded fellow like himself. Even if they licensed the liquor traffic and charged £SOO a year for the privilege of the monopoly this would not take away, the nerve danger; neither would* State control." "What's your rate of pay?' 'asked a beery voice in reply to this remark of the speaker. Mr. Bayley: "If I were after money I would be in the other camp. I teach thetruth in my school for a certain sum not fixed by me In my State theliquor people paid £BO a night to get a capable speaker to take the platform on their behalf, and I spoke over 100 times and did not get a cent., but got the satisfaction of helping my country." "All the other fellow said for his 100 dollars," said Mr. Bayley, "was that liquor tasted good going down, and I said: Will you tell us how it tastes coming up?" Mr. Bayley speaks in the Town Hall, Talhape on Monday, when questions are invited and everybody invited. Admission is free with collection only.
