ABOUT CHATEAU THIERRY.

This locality, which has been painted red in the annals of U.S.A. in the Great War is an ancient stronghold which was as valuable strategically in days gone by as in the recent fighting on the Western front. It was originally built in 1730. At the end of the 11th century, the town built its wall; and in 1520 received a charter to found a leather and cloth 'fair, which was famous for centuries. Chateau Thierry has seen much fighting down through the centuries. It was captured by the English troops in 1421, was sacked by the Spaniards in 1591, and was a centre of French resistance in the memorable invasion of 1814, when Napoleon was fighting the world. Napoleon, with an army of 24,000 of his veterans, decisively defeated Blucher's 50,000 Germans under the historic walls of the ancient fortress of Chateau Thierry.
