THE ALIEN ENEMY QUESTION.

To tlie Editor. Sir, —If Conscript is 'correct in all details it is only, one of the many glaring scandals with which we are daily confronted and for which someone is answerable, "Who?" A German's naturalisation is simply a screaming farce; it is an established fact that the German Government encourage their people to take out naturalisation papers to blind the authorities of the country in which they are living so that they can serve the Fatherland more securely and effectively. Deceit, lies, and gross excesses are apparently valued traits in the German character and receive every encouragement. Once a German, always a German, and a Hottentot is before a German as far as civilisation goes. Can you enlighten me, Mr. Editor, why it is that the alien enemy subjects are pampered as they are in New Zealand? Excuse me if I am asking too great a riddle. Are there any statistics obtainable demonstrating how many generations it takes to purify the German character and make a decent citizen of him? —I am, etc., "PUZZOKD."

("Puzzled's" statement, "Once a German, always a German," renders statistics inapplicable. One might as well ask how many years bush lawyer would have to be cultivated before it bore decent grapes. All New Zealanders appear to be asking the other question, ourselves included. —Editor.)
