A WAXWORKS EMPEROR.
SKETCH OF KAISER KARL. One 'who knew the Emperor Karl when he was an insignificant and much-snubbed subaltern in a Polish garrison town thus describes the Imperial couple. “Karl and his wife Zita were immensely popular with the Polish aristocracy.. They were "both inordinately fond of such simple pleasures as waltzing and singing sentimental duets ,and they had no side. Karl showed little aptitude for military science nor was he much intercsted in world politics. He was tnown as being pro-Polish, and, probably gn account of the slights he received at Vienna, anti German, His Vvife, who is a Bourbon and Princess of Parma, was noted for her strong leanings towards everything Italian. At that time Karl was greatly influenced by his wife's views but he had, of course, little or no prospect of being crowned as Emperor-King. Like all the Hapsburgs he was very susceptible to clerical influence, but in tbe hands of the German military leaders he would be as wax.”
