MURMAN EXPEDITION. 100 MILES SOUTH OF ARCHANGEL NEW YORK, August 16. The “New York, Times” Washington correspondent says that despatches have been received in official circles stating that the Allied troops have advanced from Archangel 100 miles southwards to Padereshekaia, on the road towards Vologda, The Bolsheviks are retreating and committing atrocities on the civil population, which is openly pro-Ally. Official despatches from Switzerland say that reports from Moscow declare that the troop trains transporting Bolshevik soldiers to fight against the Czecho-Slovaks were hindered by uprisings among the railway employees. Trotsky has threatened drastic measures against the railway men. BY BOLSHEVIKS. , Received 10.30 a.m. AMSTERDAM, August 18. According to a German newspaper reports over two hundred Russian officers were shot at Kronstadt on char-’ ges of anti-Bolshevik activities. GERMANY’S REPRESENTATIVE AT MOSCOW. LONDON, August 17. The “Daily News’ ” Amsterdam correspondent, telegraphing from Stockholm, states: Herr Helfferich’s brief stay at Moscow was characterised by the utmost secrecy. Many precautions were taken, including German guards. Undoubtedly the Social Revolutionaries intended to murder him. His flight is quite expected. The Germans asked permission to bring a German regiment to protect Helfferich. The Bolsheviks refused, mentioning that Germany’s military occupation of Ukraine failed to protect von Eichorn. The correspondent adds: Though the Bolshevik Government is aiding the anti-German movement in Ukraine, they may invite the Germans to traverse Russian soil to prevent the Entente advance on Archangel. This proposal was actually made, hut opposition was strong. PREPARING to leave, WASHINGTON, August 17. Official despatches from Berne say: Von Murm, German diplomatic representative in Ukraine, is preparing to leave Kiev owing to the hostility to the Central Powers. BRITAIN’S FOOD PROBLEM.
